MAC PROBLEMS
Here is a list of general
problem areas.
Click on a problem to find a specific solution.
Problems:
COMPUTER IS UNABLE TO READ
THE CD PROPERLY OR AT ALL.
1. CD is inserted in CD-ROM
drive but does not show up on the desktop.
2. Computer says disc is unreadable and asks if it should be initialized.
3. CD appears on desktop but as an audio-only CD.
- Make sure you have the Apple
CD-ROM extension version 5.1.1 or higher in your extensions folder (the
extensions folder can be found in your system folder) and that this
file is not damaged. Consult the documentation that came with your CD-ROM
drive regarding how to reinstall CD-ROM software.
- Make sure you have not started
your Macintosh with extensions off. (By holding down the Shift key during
Startup, extensions are turned off.)
- Make sure the disc is not
scratched or dirty. Clean your CD with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
Wipe from the center of the CD straight out (not in a circular motion
around the disk).
- Note: Sometimes it will
take a few minutes for your computer to read a CDEXTRA disc.
- Another extension may be
conflicting with your CD-ROM software. If you are running System 7.5
you can use the Extensions Manager Control Panel to turn off various
extensions. Select "System 7.5 Only" and restart. If the disc
then mounts successfully, you can add extensions back one at a time,
restarting each time and testing the disc to determine which extension
is causing the conflict. (If you are running System software earlier
than 7.5, you must manually drag extensions and control panels out of
the System Folder in place of using the Extensions Manager.)
If you are still having problems, verify that you actually do have a CDEXTRA
disc and that it is a Mac or hybrid disc. Additionally, your CD-ROM drive
may not be 100% multi-session compatible. Check out the CD-ROM
Driver section of this site for a more detailed expalination. Contact
your CD-ROM drive manufacturer to find out whether there is a software
upgrade for your drive. You can also find information regarding compatibility
issues and obtaining necessary extensions on Apple's
tech support pages and at
MacWorld's site.
SOUND DIFFICULTIES.
1. No sound is heard at all
- Verify that your volume
is turned up. Check this by pulling down the Apple menu, selecting control
panels and then opening sound.
- If you use external speakers
verify that they are plugged in, properly connected, turned on and that
the volume is turned up.
- Make sure you have the Sound
Manager extension version 3.0 or higher in your extensions folder (the
extensions folder can be found in your system folder).
- Make sure you have the QuickTime
extension version 2.0 or higher in your extensions folder (the extensions
folder can be found in your system folder).
- Try to see if you can play
sound through any other application.
2. No CD audio is heard
- Make sure sound is configured
correctly in control panels. To check, go to control panels, select
sound, select sound in, select internal CD, select play-through.
- Make sure the CD volume
is turned up. This can be checked by opening the Apple CD Audio Player.
3. Sound drops out or skips
- Make sure the disc is not
scratched or dirty.
- Quit all other applications
and turn off screen savers and file sharing.
- Disable all unnecessary
extensions.
- Make sure you copy the CDEXTRA
application icon from the CD-ROM to the hard drive (except for the Ottmar
Liebert CDEXTRA).

1. The CDEXTRA runs very slow,
stutters, stops, crashes
- Quit all other applications
and turn off screen savers and file sharing.
- Make sure you copy the CDEXTRA
application icon to the hard drive (except for the Ottmar Liebert CDEXTRA).
- Make sure you have enough
free memory for the CDEXTRA application to run. You can increase the
memory allotted to the CDEXTRA. To do this, single-click on the application
program icon on your hard drive and select "Get Info" from
the File menu. Then increase the values listed for minimum size and
preferred size depending on how much memory is available to your machine.
(You can determine how much free memory you have by choosing "About
This Macintosh" from the Apple menu while in the finder. The "largest
unused block" number is your available memory.) Be sure to leave
1 MB of memory free for system overhead.
- Turn off virtual memory
