cd extra screws my computer backwards

OK, i just got 2 CDs with cd extra; Korn - Life Is Peachy, and Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
OK, when i put them in my computer, my computer does this "temporary" freeze thing. but after like a minute, i can use my computer again, but it'll always do the freeze thing afterwards. When I try to access to cd in "my computer" it just says; device not ready. Like what it says when you dont even have a cd in the drive. When i try cd player, or winamp, to just listen to them (in between freezes that is), it just acts like there is no cd in my cd-rom!!! It's making me mad, someone help.
I'm running a pentium 233, 64 ram, ATI 4mb video, sound blaster 16, and i have a panasonic IDE 8x cd-rom, all on windows 98.
